An unsparing exploration of shaken faith, colonialism, nature’s horror and majesty, authorship and whose stories get told that also contains the cutest happiest dog you will ever see in a movie. I think I’m obsessed.

Definitely dated in its depiction of people on the spectrum, even if the portrayal of an autistic child is ultimately an empathetic one. Still, a pretty fun thriller, with the sort of incomprehensibly ridiculous plot that they could get away with in the 90s. Bruce works great with the kid.

Spielberg lends his magic touch to a loving tribute to his parents, paralleling his burgeoning love of filmmaking with pivotal moments in his childhood to show how movies can help us through life. One of the most perfect endings I've seen in a while, maybe in any movie ever. Whole cast is exquisite, and Gabriel LaBelle is a particularly wonderful find. David Lynch's bit part made me absolutely ASCEND.

Don’t think I laughed once, and while the weight of the finale did emotionally resonate with me somewhat, it came too little too late. This cast is an absolute dream (President Meryl Streep!) and they do their most, but the material is often too heavy-handed to land, on top…
