The Place Beyond the Pines tells a simple story about people in real life situations, but it takes a complex and interesting approach. Every character, even the secondary ones, have so much depth. The parts with Gosling and the world he inhabits are infinitely more interesting and emotion laden than the parts with Cooper and I'm not just saying that because Ryan Gosling makes me feel all funny. It's just a fact - he owns every role he's in. It's really very captivating how everything comes together too.
