Nihilism is bliss. Xenophilia versus tradition and national identity. Cultural and generational gaps. “No fight”, right?

At one point the mother of Pong wonders: “Why would one want to watch a foreign film with so many Chinese films available?” Ironically, sometimes I find myself wondering why not more people watch films from the Hong Kong New Wave. Does my love for Asian cinema make me a xenophile?

BURNING deals with a variety of topics — not one of them being less relevant than the other — ranging from consumerism, inequality and class differences in South Korean society and from gender to the political situation of both past and present. Invoking Miles Davis and Murakami on whose short story the film is based, Lee Chang-dong also ponders concepts like love, desire and existentialism in a slow-burning, subtle way.

The Eurostar is more my cup of tea. Gripping film but at times too generic.

Seen at the Ghent Film Festival after months of anticipation.
