Synecdoche, New York

Synecdoche, New York ★★★★½

Synecdoche, New York was by far one of my most anticipated movies on my watchlist. The neat thing about it was that I still got to go in completely blind; I simply was interested in it based off of just reputation, and of course the people who made the film.

Well... now I know why everybody always talks about this movie! Where do I even begin?? This was one of the deepest, “headiest,” and straight-up trippiest films I’ve seen in such a long time... maybe even ever. Before I go any further, I should add that I hardly understood it at all from just this first viewing!

As I expected, this movie will require multiple rewatches in order for you to even come close to wrapping your head around it. I don’t, however, see that as a negative thing in any way. I want a film to make me think about long after the credits role, and boy, that’s exactly what this did for me.

I have no clue how Charlie Kaufman comes up with this stuff. I think he’s a genius, but from another planet. His screenplay here was absolutely remarkable. The number of different themes and layers to this entire thing was beyond astounding.

I also have to hand it to Philip Seymour Hoffman; everyone in this gave great performances, but he totally stole the show. I don’t think he’s ever given a bad performance, and at that, I’d say this was one of his best. We lost him way too soon.

I find it very tricky to just talk about this movie. Not to sound pretentious, but it really was an experience. The closest thing to an issue I had was just that it was really hard to follow. I know I said before that the deeper a movie is the better, which is why in time this will probably become a 5/5 for me. I can tell this was something very special... it’s just that I’m not ready to call it perfect just yet.

I wish I could bring new thoughts and opinions to the table, but in all honesty, I’m kind of all over the place right now! I thought Synecdoche, New York was a brilliant film that I will not soon forget.
