As it turns out, I am capable of much unpleasantness.

Scathing, wicked, and uproarious, Yorgos has with The Favourite made his most accessible and sumptuously realized feature to date...yet, at the same time, calling the film “accessible” seems unfair, a sort of verbal ruse to cover up how deeply strange it actually is.

Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, and Rachel Weisz make a lethal trio in this cuntstruck™️ battle of wits and outmaneuvering, where no one is ever truly safe in their position, regardless of how much power they *think* they're in possession of at any given moment. Lanthimos—coupled with screenwriters Deborah Davis & Tony McNamara, costume genius Sandy Powell, and photographer Robbie Ryan—weaves a near-salacious level of modernity in and out of material that, under lesser, more pedestrian care, could’ve sloughed straight into mustiness; instead, it feels revitalized, tingling like a sly bite to the lip.

Stone and Weisz knock each other around like glorious chess pieces shaped in the image of Harrington and Channing, the two unabashedly reveling in their All About Evesian, razor-sharp deviousness. Colman, though, undoubtedly has the hardest task, making her Queen Anne not only guffaw-worthy hilarious but also deeply tragic, scene after scene, occasionally switching between the two sides within the span of a single frame.

What I adore most about The Favourite (and I certainly felt this with The Lobster as well) is that the moment the credits started rolling, I was already mourning the fact that I wouldn't be luxuriating in the world Lanthimos and co. created until I saw it again (and again and again).
