There’s an argument for Halloween. There’s an argument for Night of the Living Dead. I’ve certainly made the argument myself for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But when I think “The Great American Horror Film”, this is maybe most frequently where my mind goes. An absolute miracle of a perfect horror concept coming from a master of the genre at the early peak of his powers. A sublime, surreal horror fable with the greatest of all final girls.
Incidentally I caught this in the theater this time and there was a group of girls next to me who clearly hadn’t seen the movie before and one of them yelling “NOPE NOPE NOPE” when Freddy’s glove came out of the bathtub made my viewing.
