Never would I ever, in my entire life, think that I needed until I saw it and now I don't think I can live without it.
La La Land served the big expectation I had for it. For years I had heard that it's a masterpiece, the music is perfect and the cinematography is so beautiful that it'll make you cry and you know what? I completely and totally agree. I watched one of Chazelle's other film - Whiplash - and it really wasn't for me. I appreciate it for what it was but I don't see myself being obsessed with it like everyone else is. This on the other hand...may be one of the best thing I've ever laid my eyes on.
I've always had a soft spot for musicals (you can even see with my 5 star review of Mamma Mia!), but I never knew that they could be as beautiful as this was. It's remarkable, it's inspiring, it's depressing and it is exciting. Nothing can really capture how I would myself make a musical more than this. It's roaring 20's mixed with 50's music, tap dancing and beautiful sunsets. Romance and heartbreak and everything in-between. There's something so special about what this film was trying to do and how it actually did it. LA in the state it was in throughout the film reminded me of a less run-down or sun-soaking LA like in Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in....Hollywood. And, of course, the world needs more of that.
Vibrant, delightful, blue and purple and black, gorgeous and full of wonder and hope. And what it is is simple... it's La La Land.
