Patrick Delmore’s review published on Letterboxd:
‘Dolemite is My Name’ is grand story of reinvention in the tradition of ‘Ed Wood’ and ‘The Disaster Artist’. It is also hoped to be the return to form for Eddie Murphy. Who at 58 years old had seemed to be trying to win recognition playing dramatic roles. It’s an intense joy to see that a master comedic actor like Murphy, is still a master of his craft. There is so much joy to be had in this movie. After one particular scene in which Murphy’s Rudy is filming a sex scene and breaking a film crew up with laughter, he grins at the camera, and I felt a surge of warmth, an icon of my childhood is still here. The end of the film is equally sentimental with Murphy performing in the street for his fans. The movie is shored up by great supporting performances. It was great to see Westley Snipes actually play a character after watching three ‘Blade’ movies.
I hope the Oscar buzz pays off.
