Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi ★★★

I probably would not have rewatched this if I hadn't already committed to it, but I'm glad I did. I was able to pinpoint exactly what didn't work for me. The acting is mostly serviceable and the direction is solid, but the writing is all over the place. I think the story is generally fine and I really like how the plots are edited together, especially during the moments of tension, but the dialog ranges from fine to awful.

The exposition in the first half feels clunky and lazy and there are painful lines throughout like "don't do this, don't go this way" or "reach out with your feelings" that feel like they were written by a child. The plot also has a habit of conveniently pulling tricks that weren't previously established in order to resolve itself. Also, the reliance on humor was a bit much for me, especially when it comes in the middle of a particularly serious scene, which was the case on multiple occasions. Overall, it's a fine, though uneven, entry in a franchise that has always needed more consistency.
