Growing up, this was one of three movies that was on repeat at our house. Star Wars, The Wizard of Oz and Singin’ in the Rain. It had been at least a decade (probably more like 2) since I had last seen Singin’ in the Rain, but watching Babylon the other day sent me back to my childhood and necessitated a rewatch. Still pretty much remember ever single beat of this film. Cosmo Brown steals everything though. I wanted desperately to be able to do his wall flips.
Masterpiece of a film with incredible cinematography, brilliants song and dance numbers and extremely funny. You could maybe skip Broadway Melody like I always did as a kid. At least now, I can skip forward instead of ruining the VHS tape with the FFW.
A must watch and I highly, highly, highly recommend you watch this if you’re planning to watch Babylon at some point.
Just one other note. Thinking back on my 3 favorite childhood movies, one starred Debbie Reynolds and another, her daughter, Carrie Fisher. I suddenly remembered how Carrie tragically passed away and then Debbie died the next day. Though, we never know for sure, it’s always bittersweet thinking about the possibility that Debbie died of a broken heart.
