The most beautiful mess
Didn't expect this to be so god damned suspenseful. The creepy priest is so amazingly creepy and menacing at all times. The bedroom scene where he is like Joker dancing or something looked super cool. I was obviously waiting for the love and hate speech and it delivered (although I'm pretty sure he exclaims "hot dog" at one point which was funny). I also loved that when he tries to tell it again he gets immediately cut off.
Hugh Jackman going full American Psycho is definitely a sight to see. This is for sure one of his best performances all the way down to the way he walks. Having a usually likeable movie star like Jackman playing such a gross character is a bold choice but it pays off. I was surprised how often the movie gave its main character a chance to justify his actions and try to be a decent person.
Not sure why the cheating…
This film makes it really hard to not compare it to Do the Right Thing which is tough for me because DTRT might be my all time favorite. Comparisons aside La Haine was everything I wanted it to be. The opening credits playing news footage to Burning and Looting is such a bold choice that perfectly sets the mood. The characters felt like real people and not caricatures of project kids. I thought the DJ scene was an all timer and flashy camera moves are sprinkled all through this film in such a fun way. The ending was insane but I expected nothing less.
