Joaquin Phoenix's performance in The Master might just be the definitive film performance of this decade. He disappears into the role like few else can, delivering a searing intensity on screen as we feel every ounce of pain and anguish in his bones. It's transformative, animalistic, volatile. It's the portrait of a man who does not fit in with society, and is in fact shackled by it. But Freddie Quell desires something more. He yearns to belong and to feel wanted, but also learns to be in control. To be his own master.
