Strong and important film that gets a bit murky when you really think about the time travel elements. Powerful.
Who was the great someone in Someone Great? It couldn't have been Lakeith, right? He seemed like one of those hot aimless guys—how the FUCK did they last 9 fucking years?
Was it Gina Rodriguez? It's possible; she was a lil TOO lit in this, but I'm here for any romcom she's in, not just for her getting her swerve on in boy shorts, but for the #romcomletter she writes on the train.
Maybe the great someone was DeWanda. She brought it to this.
This is up there with the best films I've seen this year. Sean Baker took two relatively unknown actresses, had them stand toe-to-toe with Willem Dafoe, and churn out a beautifully-shot, gut-wrenching tale of ratchet Orlando in the shadow of Disney. There's a lot to unpack, especially since a bunch of this is told through the eyes of a 6-year-old.
All kinds of funny and painful and sad and child-like and beautiful and scary. It's America, for good or ill.
