8.9 - Smart, exciting and darkly funny, Ready or Not is a complete bonker banger with Samara Weaving shines as the final girl, making her the scream queen for a new generation.
Enjoyment: 4.7/5 | Quality: 4.2/5
Ready or Not is not the first of its kind to adopt the final girl trope into the modern time, but it is one of the best examples on how to balance dark humor with the slasher genre. Without holding back at the graphic violence, the directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, smartly weave in situational humor that provides the much-needed relief for the already tense premise. Samara Weaving is the standout as the badass newlywedded bride, Grace. As she screams, fights and crawls in her bloodstained white wedding dress, Grace joins the horror hall of fame as one of the most badass female characters among Sharni Vinson's Erin in You're Next. While tackling such heavy themes such as family and class, the film does suffer from poorly written characters development; nonetheless, it does not take away how wildly entertaining the film is. In the end, Ready or Not is destined to be a hangout cult classic among horror enthusiasts.
