    wenders is fixated on 'cool, exotic japan' so much that it ends with a note explaining a japanese word for no apparent reason. The fact that a film dealing with the life of a working class toilet cleaner being funded by the government themselves is troubling enough.

    But the great Koji Yakusho sells it with the earnestness of his.and the frequent fades between still frames and photographs work really well.

    although couldn't help but feel at times that a lot of what this was going for has had been done in a better way in sho miyake's small, slow but steady.
