“They blow you up today, you can blow them up tomorrow. It's just business.”
I’ve been up and down on this movie since release and I feel like I’ve finally arrived at a solid, formed opinion. There are so many great moments and amazing performances. Every scene with Kylo Ren is pure gold. I also think Mark Hamill is tremendous and gives one of my personal favourite performances of the last 10 years.
That being said, my favourite part of the whole film is DJ, played perfectly by Benicio Del Toro. It’s a more interesting character than we’ve seen in a Star Wars film before. With him comes a genuine sense of amorality that the saga has never really touched on. The quote I put above is probably my favourite bit of dialogue and delivery of any of the Disney-era films. I can’t tell if his exit was perfect and I never want him to come back, or if I want every single film from here on out to follow him.
I admire a lot of what Rian Johnson is trying to do here. It doesn’t all gel (among other things the humour and moral messages are super messy) but the stuff that does work is great. Interested to see more of what he does in this universe.
