tick, tick...BOOM!

tick, tick...BOOM! ★★½

Andrew Garfield is amazing but the rest, sadly, is not.

I think my main issue here is that there are two sides of the same story going on at once: the musical Tick, Tick...Boom! and the story of Jonathan Larson. And they're really kind of the same thing, so doing them both feels repetitive and unnecessary.

So rather than trying to kind of do both and just use the exposition of the musical whenever it's convenient for the story, I think I would have rather just seen the story of that musical told in an on-screen way with the songs placed throughout where they would have the most impact. So then it'd be a musical biopic, which would have opened the doors to a lot of cool opportunities.

Also I was not a fan of Lin's direction. Nothing too consistent and no real style yet, but maybe he'll develop it in some future projects.
