Film noir at its fucking finest. Joaquin Phoenix plays a grizzly bear with PTSD and a godawful past. An old guy got up three different times to pee during these 90 minutes. Disgusting pigs get slaughtered with a hammer in this thing. It’s all set to a Jonny Greenwood score that illustrates the fractured state of Joe. This is a mad fucking film, thriving in the uncertainty of violence. New York is a beautiful lie, a shiny gloss over a rotting city. Lynne Ramsay’s direction is next level, taking a source material and taking complete ownership of it. It’s nothing short of mesmerizing. You Were Never Really Here shocked me, thrilled me, horrified me - I loved it.
