John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Stay with me here. In Aristotle's poetics, we get a deathless list of the elements that make a tragedy one of quality including plot, characters, diction, thought, melody, and spectacle. In a time of hyper-vigilance about spoilers, it's refreshing to watch movies like these that are mostly spoiler-proof, because it's not the first five things on that list that makes John Wick special, it's the spectacle.

I know It's *possible* to spoil a John Wick movie for someone, but I'm…

    Big Fish

Much maligned. The Burton purists don't know what to do with it, the Wallace readers say it misses what makes the book great, and it gets unfair comparisons to Forrest Gump. But it has a great cast, beautiful visuals, and one of the best endings out there. I know I'm a sucker for happy/sad endings, but what can you do? This is one of my go-to movies when people don't know what to watch (and they've seen Groundhog Day). See for yourself.

    Blade Runner 2049

I grew up with the idea that Blade Runner was the poor man's Star Wars, and for years didn't find any reason to challenge it. Where Star Wars -- any of them in the 80's -- is accessible, Blade Runner is ornery. Dark. Miserable. Surly. Leon, Zhora, Pris, and Roy Batty seem poor substitutes for Darth Vader and the empire. Rick Deckard is a drunk, depressed Han Solo with no game. As a 10 year-old, there's no competition. I wasn't…
