The Northman

The Northman ★★★★★

Robert Eggers' most lavish accomplishment (thus far), The Northman is an epic, enthralling quest of vengeance. As vicious and gruesome as the film is, every frame manages to be beautiful thanks to Eggers' perfectionism and immaculate attention to detail. There is an intense emotional core to the film, which comes not just from Amleth's (Alexander Skarsgard) quest for vengeance, but from his romantic entanglement with slave girl Olga (Anya Taylor-Joy). Taylor-Joy gives her finest performance yet, bringing a necessary touch of feminine warmth and compassion to the grim proceedings. Skarsgard is ideally cast as the gruff, hyper-masculine hero. Nicole Kidman makes quite the impression as well, playing Amleth's mother. Contrary to what Twitter dorks tried to say, creating a film about vikings does not make Eggers a white supremacist. Executing it this well, however, does make him a genius.
