    You join the military.
You find out who you are.
    You’re hot.
    You fuck hot people.
You see everyone else die, but you don’t.
    You can’t.
    You’re the hero!

The standard take on Starship Troopers is that it’s wonderful because the viewer gets to enjoy it as the candy-coated war romp that it is, and then sometime later (or maybe even during) it hits them *why* they enjoyed it, and what their enjoyment says about them.

Terrible. Hopefully I can find some Tarkovsky I like but this is not a good start.

Stuffed with sci-fi cliches: highlights include "arrogant scientist gets his comeuppance" and "is <thing that acts exactly like a human> technically a human?”. These cliches are optimally treated in movies like Alien and Jurassic Park that understand they are working with cliches, and succeed by dialing up the pop pleasure to 11, with stunning creature designs, horror-esque pacing, and empathetic archetypal characters.

Seven Samurai/Spaghetti Western influenced in the broad structure. Plays as a bit more slapstick and sentimental (the love stories between the criminal protagonists are played differently) but there’s a novelty here not found in the predecessors. not quite devolving to a pastiche.

Good, but it just feels off at times. Gordy is a great idea and hints at a comparison with the other animals (horses/UFO) thematically, but feels out of place in a movie that’s so otherwise standard (see: the “monster hunt” final act).

    Scattered thoughts:

First half is (unintentionally?) very funny/over the top
She wants to be controlled by him, even though she’s already controlled by her mother
    Why does/did he love her?
    Genuine psychosis contrasts with repression
By saying he won’t dominate her he dominates her
The end - is it masochism? a genuine urge to die?
