The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera ★★★½

Original Title: The Phantom of the Opera
Year of Release: 1925
Genres: Horror; Drama
Director: Rupert Julian
Writer: Gaston Leroux
Main Cast: Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry, Arthur Edmund Carewe, John St. Polis, Virginia Pearson

The first and ultimate adaptation of Leroux's famous novel The Phantom of the Opera is a pretty great silent era horror film. It benefits from lavish sets, pretty actors, an iconic performance of Lon Chaney as the titular Phantom (with make-up that is the stuff of nightmares), and a truly memorable masquerade sequence in Technicolor. If you've seen other versions of this story (most likely the Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical and its film adaptation) you know exactly what is gonna happen, but seeing a silent film hold up better than a 2004 big-budget musical is impressive to say the least. On YouTube you can find different versions, but I recommend seeing this one, which is the original silent film but with the musical accompaniment of the 1929 sound re-release.
