  • Grand Jeté

    Grand Jeté 2022

    Marc

    ★★★★½ Watched by Marc 14 Jan 2022

Titane x Black Swan x The Piano Teacher x Murmur of the heart.

strikingly artful (and gorgeously shot) for a film that features a mother saying "can I touch it" to her naked son and him answering with "go ahead" -- and that's only at the half hour mark, rest assured it takes its provocations and runs with them; make incest cinema great again

A Polish man directing a story about Hong Kong versus Black American illegitimate businessmen in a turf cold war that's about to get hotter and more complex after an initial murder starts a chain of events that brings leading man Jet Li to escape from prison and come to America. Could anything be more American than this melting pot of ethnic conflict involving money, gunfights and American Football?

In chronological order this is the first of three stylistically and thematically…

Really didn't mind this one, fam. Jet Li does his thing, Aaliyah is charming as fuck, Anthony Anderson gets a few laughs. The ridiculously stylized aesthetics though are almost hilariously dated. I love that early 00's shit. I feel like I never really got to embrace it as a kid, so I'm making up for lost time now.

Worth watching just for the zip-tie fight. Enjoyable nonsense, easy to watch. Never too stupid, never dull, full of fun fight scenes. What ain't this movie doing for you?

over long by about 1/4 of its runtime and needlessly self serious but it's hard to not long for a time when studios had no problem dropping 25 mil on what is basically a glossed up Don Wilson or Mark Dacascos DTV pitch with a (then) hot soundtrack and some above average fight scenes (for Hollywood, anyway)

Jet Li is a better Romeo than Leo

”Sorry Romeo, but you gotta die.”

The tone and pacing of this film is all over the place with a plot that’s generically silly, but Jet Li’s likable and there’s a few solid moments like the prison break, football game and Li’s fights.

BONUS POINTS to Delroy Lindo who’s the very definition of cool and deserves to be in a million more movies.

”There’ll be ample time for you to express your regrets, Mr. Ch’u of that I am certain.”

★★ Watched by Dan Prestwich 28 May 2022

Makes its central observation very early on and then spends the remainder of runtime making no further elaboration. But hey, maybe that's fine, maybe it's just an worthy topic to try to wring tension out of. So the failure is really in the execution, not the idea, another example of a movie by a guy who probably has good taste in psychedelic mindfuck body horror movies, but isn't enough of a legitimate weirdo himself to come up with grotesque imagery…

Intruging that is the right word for this movie. Not everything worked for me, but I admire the big swings and the cinematography is gorgeous and Jessie Buckley really is great.

The ending is weird and confusing but something you never forget. Reminded me a bit of a very scene from the Scandinavian movie Gräns (Border) as how weird and confusing it is. You know if you know.

It's the perfect movie to watch alone at night in an empty theater before you return to your big old house in the countryside that you've rented all for yourself for a vacation.
