Before Midnight

Before Midnight ★★★★

I’ve finished the Before trilogy and as a whole it’s fantastic. The first two are some of my favourite movies of all time, so I was pretty excited for this one. Before Midnight is very different from the other two. It has a sadder tone then the first two movies, and it might be for the best. As per the first two Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy should have been nominated, and the script was obviously fantastic. Now the reason this one was my least favourite is because there were some pacing issues near the beginning. There’s a scene where this group of people are eating dinner together that went on way too long. I also feel it’s the least re-watchable, because of how sad it is, the other films left you feeling happy and excited for the future while this one makes you question it. I think it’s a smart move narrative wise, but that doesn’t mean I feel the need to watch it right now. I still thought it was great and is definitely worth watching if you haven’t seen it yet. Ethan Hawke wants to make another Before movie set during a pandemic so if they keep making one every 9 years I guess we will see it in 2022.
