Goodbye South, Goodbye 1996
Hsiao-hsien surgically hacks away the meat and bones of the conventional crime drama, leaving behind only the connective tissue — tense dinner arguments, pillow talk, and sulky night drives. These cobbled in-betweens result in a very desultory sort of personality study, one that involves little direct introspection but rather unfolds through the group dynamics surrounding events that occur outside the frame. I would definitely benefit from a second viewing with better subtitles, but the eloquence behind the otherwise plain dialogue was not lost on me.
