100 FILMS IN ONE SUMMER - FILM #96
After watching Seven Samurai, I was incredibly excited to see what else Akira Kurosawa had to offer. I’m glad that I was excited, because Ran is not only better than Seven Samurai in every aspect, it’s better than many of the movies that I’ve seen over the summer and it’s one of the best movies ever. The characters are so well-defined in this film, the use of color to distinguish these characters is brilliant, the battle scenes are jaw dropping with their scale, and the film is masterfully crafted in every way possible. I’m so, so glad that I watched this, because it’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Kurosawa, I’ll always remember you as a genius.
