Your Name. ★★★★

"There's no way we could meet. But one thing is certain. If we see each other, we'll know. That you were the one who was inside me. That I was the one who was inside you."

Taki !

Mitsuha !

Bodies are swapped with an effervescent teenage sensation that transpires through dreams; dreams that suck us into the cosmos. We are immersed in the spiritual scenery of a cosmically romantic landscape. Everything seems so surreal, so dazzling and celestial… like love that fluidly moves beyond metaphysical obstacles. Sprinkled with a glint of quirky humour that hides an exquisite ache of yearning, Your Name speaks to the longing sadness that makes dreams forever linger in your mind. With the occurrence of a comet cataclysm next to the love story, the tale becomes more dramatic and unexpected as twist of time and space is increasingly loosened, fractured, and arouses the amorous gesture of fate in an instant.

However… I, personally, didn’t connect with the movie as much as other people have and it took quite some time for these fantastical elements to sink in - such as body swap, time travel and natural disaster are all being interwoven together. The melodrama certainly drags on but Makoto Shinkai’s meticulous attention to each little visual detail is what makes Your Name a wonder to behold. Its radiant sweetness, fragile heartache and youthful peculiarities are overlaid with shimmering colors, streaming tears and sublime sceneries - where streaks of clouds paste low across the glistening blue dome, ejecting hazy sounds and quaint touches that seem to reach up from the stargate of an unearthly world. The red thread of fate starts to pull these two strangers, Taki and Mitsuha, closer together as two crowded trains are going in opposite directions...even when their hearts are staying on the same line. No matter how true their dreams are, after waking up, the sensations have only left a trace of cold sweated melancholia and a faint reverberation of each other’s names.

Look up at the lush sky full of stars in order  to find a special connection echoing through the astronomical phenomenon called 君の名は。.
