Mississippi Masala 1991
I wish I had someone to talk to about this movie; so much to digest. This may be the most complex movie I’ve seen in a while. It all came together in the third act in a remarkable way. I’m really in awe of the depth of this movie. I was expecting a romance, which it is, but it’s so much more. I would like to go into detail, but I don’t think I can do it justice. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Cha Cha Real Smooth 2022
How sweet…a little too sweet, actually. This movie seemed to be trying really hard to make the audience go “Aww”. There’s nothing inherently wrong with such sentimentality (I mean, some people like it); it’s just a little much for me. Cooper Raiff’s character was the main culprit for being mawkish. I enjoyed the performances of other characters more, especially Dakota Johnson and Vanessa Burghardt. For Raiff’s next movie, I hope he switches gears and makes one about a character like…

The Worst Person in the World 2021
Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie make this movie what it is; I can’t imagine anyone else in their roles. They both bring a lot of nuance and complexity to their characters. Another reason this movie is so good is the look; it’s quite aesthetically pleasing.
One thing I noticed on this rewatch is how quiet and slow the last 20 minutes is. It’s a change of pace compared to the rest of the movie, but what that encourages is a time of reflection on what we (as the audience) just witnessed.

Night Moves 2013
Another. Slow. Paced. Reichardt. Movie. But what that allows for is a more intimate experience; I started to feel like I was there with the actors on screen. In this case I didn’t really want to be there. The plot is full of uncomfortable situations and paranoia. I guess eco-terrorism has its drawbacks. This movie does a good job of showing how breaking the law can go awry. There is plenty of foreshadowing of the problems to come, which helps to build tension. The tension is momentarily alleviated from time to time, but for the most part it is maintained for the entirety of the movie.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On 2021
Marcel, Marcel, Marcel…what a guy. We as the audience really got to see the world from his perspective. Everything was close-up, big, and loud. This movie was surprisingly chaotic, with multiple things often going on at once. The chaotic feel was effective, though, at making us feel like we were a little vulnerable shell in an intimidatingly large world. The “scary world”was remarkably kind to Marcel in this movie, which was reassuring. I mean, how could they let anything really bad happen to him? He’s just little Marcel, after all, and he deserves all the best.

The Iron Giant 1999
One of my favorite memories is watching this with my sister when we were kids, feeling the full spectrum of emotions together. I remember literally rolling on the floor laughing, and sobbing uncontrollably at the end. I may not have felt such extreme emotions this time around, but I still really enjoyed this nearly perfect movie. For me, it’s all about the set up for the climax, and then the classic last shot. It gives me chills just thinking about it! As a matter of fact, I might need to rewatch the ending right now…
