Licorice Pizza

Licorice Pizza ★★½

I was so excited for this film, which is why I think the disappointment of the reality hit me quite hard.

I loved the soundtrack and the misè-en-scene - it was clear that a great deal of thought was put into the aesthetics. Not only that, but the cinematography was stunning. I particularly enjoyed the parallel scenes of Alana and Gary running.

That being said... it just wasn't at all what I expected. The trailer gave me the impression that this film was going to be a beautiful coming-of-age story; however, there were so many narrative threads that were just left open or purely unnecessary. Don't get me wrong: I love ambiguous endings that leave viewers questioning, wanting more, filling in the blanks themselves... but the whole film felt like it wasn't leading up to anything.

And this is just my personal opinion, but I think that the two leads had no chemistry whatsoever - their "banter" at the start of the film was boring and stale, and although the continuous tracking long-shots during that scene were nice, the characters themselves just had no spark.

Maybe I'm missing the point of Licorice Pizza. Maybe I'm not looking into it deep enough, or not focusing on the right things. All I know is that I went to the cinema to enjoy a film that I'd been waiting for since September 2021, and I ended up not really enjoying it very much.
