Rewatch #2 of 2017
No change. Rewatched it cause I'm going to try to write a review of it for PopMatters, so I wanted to bone up on my knowledge. Pretty much just doubling down on what I liked and didn't like the first time around. Still really frustrating to me that this is only 1h 42min, but feels sluggish in the second half anyway. I don't think that would've been the case if they'd felt more inclined to go down the long characte- study route, rather than just trim this to the bare bones necessary for telling the progression of the story (it's from a novel, though that novel came out just months before the film, I think, but you could see how these characters would be even better in a novel setting, with more time to really figure out what they get from one another). I could've sat through another 40 minutes of character development, which would've led to a more impactful wallop at the end. I've definitely said all this before in my previous review, but it's really, like, my only gripe with the film, but it's an enormous gripe. Otherwise it's delightful. Beautiful. Funny. Sweet. Etc. Good movie. Just not a great movie.
