It took me a second to buy in because of how unlikeable Matthew McConaughey’s character starts off, but as he changed, so did my views on the film. He delivered a really good performance and had the floor to give his all to the role. There was a Jared Leto jump-scare, and like always, he was great. I know he isn’t the best person, but I just love his acting and the roles he chooses. The emotional pay-off really hit as McConaughey’s character developed. This was really solid, in large part due to the performances by McConaughey and Leto.

This hurts to say, but I didn’t love this. I really liked some things. The direction was really good. I enjoyed the performances, special shout out to the GOAT Paul Dano. I liked the first half a lot when it focused on the love for cinema. However, by the end, there were character choices I didn’t love, with one character specifically, and some overly clichéd characters. I had a mostly good time, but some frustrating decisions really hurt this for me.

For how compelling I found the first 30-45 minutes to be, the rest of the film was rather disappointing. The explanation of the main conflict was odd, and the ending was just weird. And I wasn’t sure what it was going for or what it wanted me to walk away with. Rebecca Hall was good, the Jim Williams score was rock solid and the cinematography was pretty sleek. But…

I honestly don’t get why this isn’t getting more love. This may not objectively by a 9/10, but I think it was amazing. I want everyone to know how great I thought this was and stress that if you like thrillers, you should go support this and see it in theaters if possible.

Maika Monroe was great. Probably her best role, mainly because it’s the biggest lead role she’s had outside of maybe It Follows. Simply put, this was a…
