For what it sets out to accomplish I think it does a really good job, especially being part of a film series that’s a little goofy feeling. This one has it’s moments but at the end it’s very unnerving with ironically a basis in reality.
Maybe it’s because it’s deeply rooted in nostalgia for me but this has always been a favorite movie of mine. Even with the negatives and after reading the book which of course delves deeper into Sayuri’s story and emotions. I would love to see a remake someday that is more authentically Japanese but until then I can’t help but love this movie.
