too cool of a movie for a lead performance that boring.
i also do wish there was more body horror, tho i’d understand if repeating the exploding head thing would’ve felt numbing after awhile. but the score is an all timer and i do think the concept itself is just plain fun. still don’t think i understand anything cronenberg has ever done or said in a movie, for now i’m just kinda nodding along and not looking away. when the guy with the glasses and mustache showed up i went “oh it’s THAT movie!!!”

It’s hard to account for recency bias in saying something this definite, and surely someone will want to start a useless argument or hold resentment against the movie because they disagree, but I think this is one of my favorite movies I have ever seen. It’s been a while since I felt that way with something new. But my expectations were high going in and I still thought so 30 minutes in. Then an hour in. Then 2 hours in.…

“If you figure a way to live without serving a master, any master, then let the rest of us know, will you? For you’d be the first person in the history of the world.”

I’ve thought about this quote constantly for 8 years now. Saw this movie in 70mm at an Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, during college at my most “young adult trying to understand film as much as everybody around him.” I walked away with nothing more than “pretty…

    ★★★★ Watched by karsten 30 Jun 2021

have wanted to watch this for years and for having finally gotten around to it i think i’ll give myself a pat on the back. which isn’t to say it’s boring or disturbing. it’s bleak, but that’s not what makes it a (purposeful) slog to get through. just very confrontational and uncomfortable. the dude goes around and ruins everyone’s day but those people only had to hear his speech once, think about us! used every bone in my body not to make my post simply “this is joker but with more words.” david thewlis is really good in this too.

Probably the most nihilistic movie I've seen.

obviously soderbergh’s intent with the shaky cam/low FPS is to capture the vertigo of agoraphobia, but ultimately this is a movie about how it feels to be too stoned at the grocery store

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

A warm tribute to a kind of relationship I feel like lots of us have stuffed way in the back of a mental drawer: the ill-advised crush turned briefly, oddly, achingly mutual, transmuted not into a romantic relationship but into an ambiguous, charged entanglement.

Alana's reluctant seduction by Gary in the first few scenes strikes me as incredibly psychologically realistic. She outlines a boundary upfront and continues verbally repeating it, but by her actions edges toward it out of curiosity.…

Just an absolute achievement in animation. Weird to look at something so current and know it’ll exist in the annals of history for its medium, but it’d be a struggle to find someone who would disagree. Going to watch it every year. Going to buy the art book and flip through it like a child.
