I, Tonya

I, Tonya ★★★

Let’s start with the positives: Robbie and Janney’s performances were outstanding. The plot had it’s moments, especially with regards to humor. And who doesn’t like to travel back in time for some 90s vibes?

However, this film also struggled at times. It never found it’s true identity between the disjointed pacing, haphazard depiction of violent abuse, and along with that the intermixing of very raw and sad events with pulpy music that detracted from the poignancy of the moment. This one is essentially worth watching for the performances (and story if you’ve never heard it before), but a perfect film I, Tonya is not.
