Reservoir Dogs

Reservoir Dogs ★★★★½

“You shoot me in a dream, you better wake up and apologize.”

Whelp, here’s one of those “movies I definitely should have seen a long time ago, but I never got around to it, so instead I pretended like I had seen it for years and had formed a solid opinion on it” type deals. Glad I finally got around to it, because it is indeed good. I’m planning to try and do more of these soon. I think I mainly never got around to this movie because I’ve never been the biggest fan of Tarantino and specifically his style, but I think its actually done well in this movie (or, I guess, in a way that I actually enjoy.)

Quentin Tarantino is often known for his style in terms of his writing, and how he writes out of order, and never is that more clear than in Reservoir Dogs, and specifically within the opening scene. It gives us that classic Tarantino dialogue with his masterful usage of subtext (underlying messages and implication utilized within speech) while establishing our main characters at the same time. It’s honestly a really good opening scene and fits the film perfectly. I think most Tarantino movies do the “written out of order” thing pretty well, and the same goes for Reservoir Dogs.

I also feel like this needs to be addressed her but good god, the performances are so good. Steve Buscemi, Harvey Keitel, and Tim Roth all have phenomenal screen presence, and give great performances. Steve Buscemi in particular is going fuckin ham doing the whole paranoia thing, and goddamn is he good at that lol. Same can be said for Harvey Keitel, but in a slightly different way.
