The list of flaws in this movie shrinks each time I watch it again. A movie that’s been with me since I rented it from a grocery store while I was staying with my kickass grandmother for the weekend. I was nine. We would watch the shit out of movies like Black Rain, we’d watch siskel and ebert every Friday.

Anyway, this movie has always been great and Andy Garcia is one of the best partners ever. His death is gutting, forever.

Fuller really uses this colorful CinemaScope widescreen to his fullest advantage. His Tokyo is so rich and compelling, practically in every scene. It’s brimming with energy and a crackerjack noir plot, making you wish once again that Sam Fuller could have gotten his hands on a serious, big-budget production. Great climax on a Tokyo boardwalk.

Yes it’s interminably long for no real reason and yes it’s incredibly emo, but goddamn if it’s impossible to turn away from. Even in its most self serious moments. Love the dreamy soft focus touch to many of the scenes. Love the detective elements and the entire wet vibe. Love that the big car chase has penguin stuck in immovable traffic. Love that The Riddler is some 4chan troll with 500 followers.

Did not love much of the Catwoman subplot, which might have been better in a sequel.

Seems the main theme is too many characters in Gotham have metaphorical and sometimes literal wings.

I tried watching this maybe two years ago, in the early days of the pandemic, and I wasn't into it. Not because of anything pandemic related, but perhaps because it didn't translate to that current moment really at all. Now, two years later, I'm 41, and it's real the way life's anxieties can sometimes get the better of you as you age and worry about your own health and the health of your family.. and this time around, the universality…
