That opening sequence is damn near perfect. It introduces the film's world threatening stakes as well as its lighthearted tone. Visually it is mostly a mishmash of designs you've seen before: there's some Star Wars in there as well as chunks of Blade Runner. It is elevated, though, by the colourful costumes by Jean-Paul Gaultier and the otherworldly score. And I'm not only referring to the famous Plavalaguna opera scene here.

At the same time the film never becomes a…

That John Carpenter, he can never tell a story like literally everyone else would, does he? In this he decided to put awkward fades to black after every scene (because why not?) and I came to quite love his offbeat approches by now.

The same goes for the reveals of who is infected. Rarely do we get any cheap foreshadowing for what is to come. The audience is as unaware as the researchers and also about as bamboozled when the…

As fun as it was to watch this with kids, it also shone a light at the film's weakpoints. The movie's first act is fun and creative, while its second act basically devolved into "Hey look, it's Batman/Star Wars/LotR!" The fact that the children became noticably restless and bored is what made me truly realise how lame it got. Luckily, directors Lord and Miller picked up the pace again in the third act.

Not only that, they actually open up…

Not that I know this for a fact, but it always felt to me as if Hollywood got rid of Verhoeven quite unceremoniously. Apparently he decided to build his own Hollywood with blackjack and hookers - or more precisely: with a black cat and Huppert. And boy, am I mad at myself for not watching Elle earlier.

This film is insane. We start with quite the unbearable depiction of rape, then we get some everyday minutia, a humourous exchange of…

We're facing the aftermath of Force Awakens' whopping success just now, aren't we? This movie is okay. I didn't like it, the bad aspects were genuine deal breakers for me. The writers even try to push the shameful term of "requel" for this kind of film.

On that matter, I can't stand it when people in movies endlessly drop movie refereces. No one talks like that in real-life. At least I don't believe a Gen Z jock guy would drop…

On the drive home my mate and I put it this way: It's like going on a blind date with a person who you already know you are going to like a lot. You are ready to get your heart taken by storm and to fall in love head over heels. Then Dune shows up at the bar and tells you right away that it wants to take it extremely slow and for you to first get to know its…
