    A Silent Voice

Really beautiful animation paired with plenty of emotional scenes. It feels a little too long and most of the characters really aren’t interesting. I’ve written this a few hours after watching the film and honestly not a lot has stuck with me despite how engrossed by the story I was.

It definitely has some intriguing messages about how we can be redeemed for past actions and the nature of the human mind as well as the way we feel emotions. However, the plot feels a little messy and it starts too feel repetitive after a while after we get another speech about the characters hating themselves.

    Primal Fear

A pretty average crime drama but still has a great twist and a solid performance by Edward Norton in his first role (which also earned him as oscar nomination). A lot of stuff, particularly near the start, feels pointless and ultimately the first half drags a bit. It definitely gets more interesting as it goes along but the end still has way too many loose strands. There was also a very weird (romantic?) dynamic between the two lawyers that I wasn’t too keen on.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Usually this really wouldn’t be my sort of thing but Gilliam makes it work by creating a unique experience that overwhelms your senses and has one of my favourite Johnny Depp performances. It demonstrates the danger of drugs without making it feel like one of those anti drug videos you had to watch in school and I liked the portrayal of the American dream that is being destroyed. The comedy is also great but never feels forced and Gilliam perfectly captures the dirty but dazzling aesthetic of Las Vegas in the 70s.
