Matt N.’s review published on Letterboxd:
I do enjoy this film series for its insane take on how an action film can work. They are put together incredibly well, and even though the action is often difficult to follow due to the speed and "confined" nature of it, it's difficult not to be amazed at what's on screen. Keanu Reeves is also great in the title role.
But, I also find the John Wick series to be completely soulless. It's often action for the sake of action (the worst culprit here being the extended fight alongside Halle Berry), and there's never a sense that John is in any real danger. He can fight off an entire army with ease and not take a single hit. There's also very little character development and the hints of world-building are shallow to the point of stupidity.
I think there's a lot of fun to be had with these movies, but they are not classics for me. I'm also bewildered as to how this didn't get an 18 rating!
