"This is water. What I want is the ocean."

Probably the most mature Pixar movie to date, with themes as complex and heavy as Up or Inside Out. This is the best looking 3D animated film I've ever seen, with both the fantastical and realistic settings looking amazing.

Definitely see this appealing to older viewers, jazz fans, and people who have experienced wondering about their purpose, their spark. This is also some of the best African-American representation I've seen on…

"The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it."

I know nothing about writer/director Joshua Friedlander, but I'm going to make some assumptions, just for fun.

I'm going to assume he's a married, heterosexual male.

I'm going to assume he was watching Game of Thrones one night, and saw Nathalie Emmanuel (who is objectively gorgeous, the rest of my assumptions all rest on that fact).

I'm assuming this gave him normal, heterosexual male thoughts.

    I'm assuming…

"No matter how bad things might be at home, no expects to get killed for it.

Sometimes you can find a gem with these late 80's/early 90's erotic thrillers, but this one is serviceable at best. The subject matter is the usual stuff - money, murder, and betrayal, but Mortal Passions suffers from being generally boring for long stretches of time and taking itself way too seriously. This is somewhat counterbalanced by how silly the ending is.

Austin Butler's performance is easily the best and brightest part of what I'd describe as one of the most pleasantly watchable messes that I've watched in a while.

I haven't seen a movie that haphazardly careens from important historical event to important historical event in this way since Lee Daniel's The Butler, and it's just not my preferred kind of storytelling. This sort of narrative feels so artificial and clunky (I don't think it's been done well since Forrest Gump)…

I agreed with 90% of what M3GAN did in this movie and honestly most of that last 10% falls in a gray area at worst. Anyway, this was a great time at the movies with a margarita and some good company. Not quite a turn-your-brain off kind of flick, but it was easy to watch, engaging, and very entertaining. I’d go watch something like this every weekend at the cinema if it was a consistently available experience.

“Will you please stop obsessing about that woman? Don’t you feel sorry for her?”

The camerawork, my goodness. So dynamic and kinetic, without ever feeling frantic or erratic.

And that ending. So haunting. I was wondering where the story was going and how it would resolve, but I wasn’t ready for that.

At times I felt parallels to The Handmaiden, both are love stories built on death, but nope, Decision to Leave is its own thing. A slowly unwinding knot of obsession with a resolution that’s as cruel as it is devastating. I hope no one ever loves me that much.
