Anno frames Godzilla as a walking nuclear reactor, a reflection of Japan’s devestating nuclear history. The film focuses on the bureaucratic process involved in the monster’s arrival. And while this does serve as an interesting and sometimes very funny perspective, it did get old for me. Too many shifting boardroom meetings and procedures prevented me from fully connecting emotionally with some of the action.
