I watched this movie over two weeks ago now and one of many reasons it’s taken me so long to write the review for it is that I’m unsure of where I stand on this movie.

First of all, I’d like to talk about the aspects of this movie I am sure about. It is an amazing debut from Emerald Fennell. I’ve come to the conclusion that even if I’m unsure of quite how much I agree with the film’s message, the way it’s conveyed is bold, exciting, visually/stylistically interesting and unforgettable. There is no doubt in my mind that she is a director to watch and has a great future ahead of her.

Secondly, both Bo Burnham and Carey Mulligan’s performances are awesome. I’ve always loved Bo’s work and seeing him act again after The Big Sick was long awaited for me and he did not disappoint in the slightest. He’s my choice for the Golden Globe’s Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical category so far. Carey Mulligan’s performance is so demanding, she’s playing a complicated, intense and deeply flawed character and somehow manages to hit all the right notes.

The ending is the main issue I have with the movie. I can’t stop thinking about it, and not necessarily for the right reasons. Right now this movie stands at a 4/5 for me but it could very, very easily be 1/2 star higher or lower depending on if I end up making a decision on the ending and in which way. Currently, I’m pretty torn on it as is probably clear. The best way I can put it is that I agree with most of the negative and the positive reviews but I can't say that it isn't worth seeing.
