Took me a couple of days to finish this series. Very relevant in these times, as it examines the insidious nature of racism. Everyone is guilty of it in this story, except maybe the baby. You'll see what I mean if you watch it. Reese Witherspoon is brilliant as the well-meaning but inherently racist control freak mom.

    The Assistant

    ★★★

The sad tale of a young assistant working in a film company who allows herself to be beaten down, pushed aside, humiliated, verbally abused and bullied, and is made to write emails apologizing to her boss after he cruelly berates her. Apart from her desk duties she also takes out the trash and washes dishes...she endures this treatment because she's been told it's a "good opportunity" in order to rise up in the biz. The "boss", I imagine is a blend of like, Ellen DeGeneres and Harvey Weinstein.
    Yeah, great industry.

From Chile. Another quiet film about finding and claiming your own voice (literally). Not a whole lot of dialogue in this film, the scenery, story, and the main character, Memo, are the driving force of this movie.

Let's not forget this was based on a true story. Artist Mark Hogancamp was the victim of a vicious homophobic attack by white supremacists. This movie lets the viewer into his world documenting his emotional and mental journey towards healing. He accomplishes this through meticulously staging WWII scenes using dolls and other scale appropriate props. All in all, I enjoyed this film showing how Mark overcame his trauma.
