showing intense torture of prisoners then building entirely to a release, the torture of the torturer, that isn't visually, narratively, or emotionally engaged with the impact of the film as a whole felt like such a cop-out. and a missed opportunity for a meaningful and inventive impression. if it was meant to be a statement, i missed it.

we get it, Paul's written about transcendental cinema, but to call this a Bresson riff? absurd. this is as much First Reformed as it is The Canyons. introspective with a lot of gaudiness (but without the fun).
