This didn't really click for me the first time I watched it and I have no idea why - it definitely did now. The melodrama, the score, the tortured marriage, Piero Tosi's costumes (always, always), the contempt towards the aristocracy and especially the patriarchy.
Also Giannini and Antonelli at their most gorgeous.
