Carpenter makes these few rooms feel like the last place on Earth. Candlelight and religious imagery essentially mourning what is yet to come. This sets up the perfect place for trademark Carpenter imagery of breaking the laws of reality which are always movies in themselves. Liquid dripping upwards, mirror portals, video dreams.
