Christmas films are ten-a-penny, from the classic and wonderful, to the crass and ridiculous. 'Elf' starts well, when a baby accidentally comes home with Santa to Elf-land to be adopted by Bob Newhart. He grows up to become Will Ferrell, and his man-child persona really grates throughout.
Far too silly, and really a one-joke film - would he really, constantly, parade in town in his elf outfit and not realise everyone else isn't actually behaving or dressing like that? There are some nice ideas - Buddy the elf trying to melt the heart of his Potter-like Dad (James Caan), the awkward romance with Zooey Deschanel (who is better here than she was as Trillian in the film of 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy').
I just don't feel the love for this daft slapstick and I hate, hate, hate Ferrell.
