    The Turning

There’s nothing scary, entertaining, or interesting about this. I couldn’t tell you a single plot point because there are none - literally nothing happens. Maybe they thought the abstract ending would distract from the fact that is movie is as boring as watching paint dry, but it actually does the opposite, highlighting what an absolute waste of time it is.

    ★★★½

This had the potential to be really incredible, but the use of heavy-handed voice-over to fill silence wears on my patience and feels almost cowardly. Don’t worry, I can handle a thirty second stretch of beautiful visuals and haunting score without Brad Pitt muttering platitudes in my ear, I won’t turn the movie off.

    The Father

    ★★★★½

Surprisingly enthralling and heartbreaking, this came out of nowhere as one of my favorites of the year. Great performances from Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman, a fantastically unique script, precise editing - really worth a watch.

    Another Round

    ★★★★½

Equal parts hopeful and depressing, the director and cast manage to not only make this insane premise believable, but life-like. Mads Mikkelsen in particular deserves recognition for his role - and for his dance moves.

    The Bishop's Wife

Just imagine if It’s a Wonderful Life wasn’t fun and heartwarming, and instead of Clarence helping George Bailey he decided to try and seduce his wife, and you found yourself actually rooting for him because George was such an insufferable killjoy. That’s this movie.

    ★★★½

Great performances all around, real suspense, and has the good sense to know when to say something and when to keep quiet. Really solid.
