Eternals

Eternals ★★½

“When you love something, you protect it.”

Eternals is probably one of the only marvel movies ever I wasn’t really that interested in. The trailers didn’t shock me or excite me all that much but knowing academy award winner Chloe Zhao was behind the camera interested me enough. Going into this I knew it would be pretty different than many other MCU projects and for the majority of it, it was. I can’t say i was extremely disappointed as I didn’t think I was going to love this, but it’s honestly one of the worst in the MCU. I had a lot of problems with this movie. For one, it was just hard for me to get on board with the premise of these characters and their backstory so late into the universe. I understand it’s something new that marvel is trying to bring in but it just felt too late to me.

I don’t buy that they would’ve never interfered in human conflicts like with Thanos due to “deviants not being involved”. That doesn’t even make sense seems how their goal is to make sure the planet isn’t destroyed which is what would’ve happened somewhat with the snap. The movie is extremely long and I was actually surprised by how nicely the pacing was. Although I was never bored, their is a lot of heavy exposition in this movie due to that runtime and it got really repetitive. I cared to a degree, but after awhile I just wasn’t that invested. The characters were another worry I had before the film as their is so many in this film and I was sadly right. I didn’t care about a single character in this movie. I REALLY liked Kingo played by Kumail Nanjiani but that just cause of his performance not the character itself. Everyone else was very underdeveloped and not that interesting.

The humor is also very heavy handed and I won’t lie and say I didn’t laugh Because I did a few times for sure, but it felt like so much even for a marvel movie. The deviants were also so dumb to me. They have no real purpose besides wanting to eat our heroes and that’s it and I feel like they were wasted potential from what I hear about them in the comics. Now for the positives, I mostly just appreciated the ambition more than the quality of what I got. It’s one of the most unique films in the MCU and I respect it for that. The visuals are stunning like the trailer showcased with beautiful cinematography. The action is shot really well and is alot of fun. The third act is definitely my fav part of the movie as it the most enjoyable part with a lot of the characters getting their moments to fight. Overall, Eternals just didn’t work for me but offered some redeeming moments.
