Gone Girl

Gone Girl ★★★★½

How Pike didn’t win best actress is beyond me.
“We were happy pretending to be other people. We were the happiest people we knew. And what’s the point of being together if you’re not the happiest. But Nick got lazy. He became someone I did not agree to marry. He actually expected me to love him unconditionally then he dragged me, penniless, to the naval of this great country and found himself a newer, younger, bouncier Cool Girl. You think I’d let him destroy me and end up happier than ever? No fucking way. He doesn’t get to win!”
Gone Girl is still one of the darkest films I’ve ever seen. Rosamund Pike gives the best female lead performance I’ve ever seen. She cements her name as one of the best villains of all time here. Everything she does to her husband is horrible. Their are a lot of villains that are so memorable cause they are both evil but have a side that u can usually somewhat understand. Amy Dunne has nothing redeeming or likeable about her at all. The first hour of this film tries to make us believe Nick is trying to cover up what’s really happened and that he lying to everyone. I love the themes this film tackles about how the media feeds people garbage and not everything you see on the news is true but a lot of people will believe what they read or hear anyways. Pretty much everyone including the detectives working on the case eventually think it was Nick and you just see his life slowly starting to crumble and it’s so sad. When the twist is revealed and we Pike enters the film becomes a masterpiece. The screenplay for this film is probably one of my favorites and the way Fincher directs some of these scenes is so genius visually. She will literally do anything she has to to make sure she ruins her husbands life and the things she does to herself especially to frame someone is disgusting. She is truly one of the best depictions of a psychopath I’ve ever seen in a movie. And what makes it all the most sickening is that she ultimately wins in the end. When she comes back home, the media is all nice and there for her and Nick so if he leaves everyone will hate him. And to make it even worse than everything we have already seen, she reveals she is pregnant knowing that will make him have stay. Most of the time I would love to see someone like Nick get revenge somehow and come out on top, but I love how brutal the ending is and their isn’t anything that ever went Nicks way.
